PDF File History Guide of The Nutcracker Ballet. The Nutcracker is a ballet in two acts. Act I takes place in two scenes. Scene 1 is the Stahlbaums drawing room. Scene 2 takes place in the Land of Snow. Act II takes place in The Kingdom of the Sweets. The music for The Nutcracker was written by Peter Illyich Tchaikovsky. He was commissioned to produce The Nutcracker by the Marinsky Theatre in 1891. The story is based on the tale of “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by E.T.A. Hoffmann.
